Established in the beautiful little village of Saint-Aubin, Côte d’Or, Burgundy, the family has been growing vines since 1885. First of all, Louis Roux bought the first plot. His grandson Marcel, born in 1927, will play a major role in the development of the estate and will increase the area up to 25 ha in Saint-Aubin, Chassagne-Montrachet, Puligny-Montrachet, Meursault and Santeney. He is also the one who will push the marketing and the influence of the appellation Saint-Aubin everywhere in the world. Marcel’s three sons will join him later and create the Maison Roux.
Today, the vineyard covers more than 60 ha, spread over 13 villages in Côte de Beaune, Côte de Nuits and Côte Chalonnaise. Respectful of the earth and nature, they highlight the purity of the fruit to reveal the unique character of their locations.A modern and beautiful estate, overlooking nature with vineyards as far as the eye can see. Matthieu and Sébastien, the fifth generation, joined the family business in 2003.
During this visit, I met Sébastien, who explains that the two brothers have set themselves the task of “waking up” many forgotten places; this led to an increased attention to detail that quickly became their priority. They have a sustainable and ecological approach, like many young people of their age. They feel touched by all that reminds us that the environment is something that we must take care of and cherish. They prefer the least possible inputs to the vineyard as to the cellar to respect and preserve to the maximum the fruit, its expression and the terroir.
I did the tour of the vineyards with Sebastien who brought me to witness breathtaking views, showing the extent and complexity of the parcels of Burgundy with a bonus piece of very interesting history. Yes, Burgundy is beautiful and unique; its history and all the peculiarities of it make this region the world’s most talked about with so much affection, admiration and respect.
