Suggestions for Thursday, August 29th 2019

by Sébastien Légasse

For this last week of August, Sébastien Légasse, our head sommelier, presents three European wines! For the first wine, a Rioja Alta that will charm you with its spices and complexity on the palate; enjoy it with your favorite red meat for even more pleasure! Then, a visit to Provence is in order, with a white wine from the Les Becs Finaux cuvee with citrus and fruity aromas. Finally, for the third product, the south is once again visited, but this time under the Sicilian sun with a Terre Siciliane blessed with a strong character that breathes freshness and sunshine!

Monte Real Reserva Rioja 2014

For more than 125 years, the Artacho family has been producing wine in the Rioja region.  They now have 300 hectares of clay and limestone soils, on which the Graciano, Mazuelo and Tempranillo varietals grow. The latter is the star of this cuvee. The Reserva mention specifies that the ageing must be of three years, including at least one year in barrels. For this wine, we are talking a period of between 24 and 30 months. The woody, balsamic notes are well perceived, harmoniously integrated with jammy black fruits. It is a sensual, spicy and complex wine. The tannins immediately begin to soften and we can appreciate the extraction, which adds a depth to the taste. A red meat would be the perfect companion, beef or lamb, cooked on the grill with a “dry rub”. Real happiness in a bottle!

Tardieu-Laurent Les Becs Fins Blanc Côtes-du-Rhône 2018

The small town of Lourmarin, nestled in the heart of southern France, between Avignon and Aix-en-Provence, is home to the Tardieu-Laurent domain.

For a long time, the duo of Michel Tardieu and Dominique Laurent were the ones who offered a very wide product range, from Burgundy to the south of the Rhône. Sadly, their paths have now separated. Even if the ship has not changed its name, it only has one captain left: Michel Tardieu. Les Becs Fins combines the structure of Grenache with the aromas of Viognier. It unites these varieties perfectly and provides structure with more aromatic characteristics. Already superb to the eye and blessed with a captivating aromatic range, the nose is fresh and exhales citrus notes on a light salty background. The palate is flattering, with notes of pear and citrus fruits. Balanced, a little round and rather fresh, it is a very good white wine for any occasion, with seafood or simply for the happy hour with good friends!

Arianna Occhipinti Bombelieri Terre Siciliane 2016

Arianna hits another home run! She represents the ardor of youth with its thirties, but know that she already has 16 vintages to her credit! She is not looking for large productions, but rather for the quality that will allow the terroir to express itself in all its authenticity. With this small estate in Sicily, grown organically, it enhances the Frappato with this Bombelieri 2016. This varietals produces wines on the fruit, with supple tannins. The nose is very expressive and floral, with a clear dominance of lavender. The palate is fresh, supported by rounded tannins. It’s a REALLY good product; imagine this wine with a simple dish of fresh pasta with dried tomatoes, nothing more complicated than that. A birthday to celebrate soon or simply because you deserve it? Don’t hesitate to spoil yourself!
